History
Association for Social health In India: (hence forth called ASHI Maharashtra)
ASHI has a long history way back in the 1950
Wives of IAS officers and highly placed ladies like Mrs Paymaster, Mrs Bakle, Mrs AluChibber, Mrs VijayalaxmiPandit expressed their desire to help women in distress and hence formed an Association called Moral and Social Hygiene established in 1955 and registered it on 27th June 1957.
The then Government of Bombay allotted an office in barrack number 4 at Dinshaw Vachha Road Churchgate, Mumbai 400020. Activities of helping women in distress and moral danger began through counseling of women who travelled to offices.
Initially AMSH were conducting raids in Red Light Area but had a big question where to shelter these rescued girls so thought of constructing a Shelter Home. To expand this activity more in physical form, the Association approached the Maharashtra Government to allot a plot to build a structure so that the activities can be conducted elaborately.
Government of Maharashtra, the then Honorable Chief Minister VP Naik, allotted a plot of land in Mankhurd, at the turning of the Eastern Express Highway, thereafter Central Social Welfare Board (Delhi) also allotted certain grants to construct the building. The trustees and the managing committee of the Association collected further donations and constructed a building to conduct the activities to help women in distress. The ground floor was completed and the short stay home started in 1979, subsequently inaugurated by the then Chief minister late Shri Shankar Rao Chavan. At present it is called the Swadhar Greh and supported by the Ministry of women and Child development.
